The Case For Space Society was founded with the goal of increasing youth engagement in space exploration through various creative means, and our flagship project Nova In Space is at the core of our efforts to achieve this goal. We believe that inspiration can take many forms, but ultimately, it relies on a single element: storytelling.
There is nothing more powerful than a thought-provoking narrative, and there is no limit to the knowledge that can be gained from the intersection of art and science. Whether it be through writing, songs, visual art, or some other unique form, storytelling has always been essential to scientific inspiration, which is what we set out to achieve when we began our project Nova in Space over a year ago.
Nova in Space is a series of 15 travel posters designed by Sayan Saha that follow the adventures of Nova the astronaut, who embarks on a trip around the solar system. The beauty of having our protagonist hidden inside a spacesuit is that any child can see themselves reflected within Nova. There is nothing more discouraging to a child's dreams than a lack of representation, so we purposfully kept the identity of our space-bound protagonist a mystery.
Each poster stands on its own and explores a unique object in the solar system, but put together, the complete series tells a single story that begins and ends in the vicinity of Earth. Although creative liberties were taken to make the posters more engaging, the fundamental ideas expressed are still based entirely in science, as one of our major goals was to encourage viewers to independently explore the scientific themes behind each poster.
During the creation process, we consulted numerous scientific papers and even met with the Canadian Space Agency to ensure that our posters are up to date with the latest in space research. As you browse through the gallery, we invite you to visit the supplementary links where you will find a wealth of information to get you started on your own exploration.
But without further ado, we present to you Nova in Space...
